LiU has an enrolment of about 26,000 undergraduate students and 1,300 Ph.D. students. The university has 17 departments located in two cities: Linkoping and Norrkoping.

The Department of Physics, Biology and Chemistry has been in operation for three decades (30 full professors, 130 graduate students, and 100 guest researchers).

The Division of Surface Physics and Chemistry focuses on the study of hybrid interfaces, electronic structure of ?-conjugated polymers and oligomers, as well as hybrid spintronics. The group uses mainly photoelectron spectroscopy techniques such as XPS, UPS and resonant photoemission (core-hole-clock) either at the home facilities or at synchrotron radiation laboratories.
